Recently, I saw news about ‘Sex’ doll or ‘Angel from Heaven’ doll which described by Thai police and locals in Thailand and other countries. These dolls that people would find in the remote river or can be bought from websites or from the old shops. Other sinister dolls that appeared in the movies – Child’s Play, Voodoo doll or Annabella. Many people would think it is a cursed doll or devilish doll that their children could hold.
The doll’s eyes that looked innocent to you and shiny bright but all I could say it was a sinister doll to me that I had encountered as a kid of 11 year old.
Usually, girls like me loved all kind of dolls for as long as parents and relatives bought for us as a ‘Christmas’ present. A doll with black eyes and you could say its demonic eyes that people should avoid.
One of the dolls that I keep for a long time that reminds me of the past, taken from my mum’s house because she said this doll with black eyes, is special to me when I was a kid back then and it often there for me when I slept.
A long time ago, I could carry a rag doll along to where I was going to and it just followed me whenever I went. When my family and I visited my late grandma’s village in early 1970s during school holiday. I brought my doll along, one of my cousin’s younger sister saw me and back away from me. I had no ideas of what happened, it seems that she was afraid of me or what.
After I put down my ragged doll on the wooden bed at my late grandma’s room, joined my cousins for games and I totally forgot about the doll that left on the wooden bed.
After dinner, I went back to the room and found it missing. I searched around the room and wouldn’t find it and I thought it must be my cousin who took it because she saw me earlier in the morning. So I confronted her and she started to cry as if she was frightened. Then my cousins came rushing in after they heard her cry. I felt bad and forgot the doll completely.
Next day, my cousin came in and shouted that there was a commotion outside my grandma’s villages. We run out of the village, walked up the hill and found a boy from other village opposite the road in the forest, fainted next to the pond and there was a doll lying near him! I stood frozen still, a doll’s head turned awkwardly right at me as if it looked shocked or innocent. I was stunned! I picked it up as they didn’t see a doll was there earlier because they were too busy attending to a boy. Later a boy came round due to fainting spell and he looked at me very frightening and terrifying, couldn’t say a word, not even his parents! As if I stood transparent to him and the others. I couldn’t believe it! I thought he had made a pact with a person of whom I didn’t know. So I didn’t think much of it.
Late at night, I slept followed by a loud thud, the doll was missing again! This time, I was aware something was not right. I waked up, looked around and walked out of the room, it was so dark and couldn’t see clearly, so I used fluorescent lamp that normally used in kampong at that time. I searched my doll every corner and niche in the house and found nothing. I thought it must be gone somewhere outside the house. But the door was locked and I saw the wooden window ajar, I looked outside and saw a doll walked awkwardly to that direction where a boy fainted earlier! Feeling frightened, I run hastily back to the room, left fluorescent lamp in the hall, covered a blanket over me and slept till the next morning.
In the morning, my cousin again shouted and everybody run out of the house and there was a large python lying dead in the bushes and a doll was a few away from it. Again I picked it and went back to the room as if nothing happened.
In the afternoon, I looked at my doll’s black eyes and it stared at me sinisterly, I freaked out and a doll dropped on the floor and I heard a word “Ouch!”, It started to move its head, tilted to one side looked at me angrily.. Suddenly, a boy who fainted earlier that day, came running towards me, saw my doll on the floor and he stood frozen and visibly shaken. After a few minutes, he became quiet and said in a low voice that it was my doll that saved his life from a large python in the field near the pond. I was shocked and couldn’t believe my ear! But what about the ‘dead’ large python? Nobody knew.
After a boy left the room, a doll suddenly spoken in a low voice and said that she killed a python because it often appeared in the village at nights to hunt its prey. I was too shocked to hear those words coming from my doll as if there was a spirit reside it. Later that year, my family and I visited the temple and I brought the doll along with me. The monk looked at it and felt uneasy, asked to be burned it as advised otherwise it would bring an unfortunate events and I was very sad. I let it go in peace. No words came from a monk after it burned. On that same year, the monk who saw my doll and had passed on, was told by senior monk. Maybe a spirit resided my doll had revenged on him. I don’t know and don’t think about it otherwise a spirit would unhappy as if it killed a human being in a silent hour or he (monk) was sick at that time. Being young at 11 year old, who could think a spirit would harm a child that could hold it gently for a long time.
In the late 1970s, my mum bought a new doll similar to the one that I had. But it is porcelain ‘coin-bank’ doll from a rag doll that had transformed into. It has the same ‘Black’ eyes. When I look at it and it smiled that gives me the creeps! It brought back to life again? I wonder but it wasn’t and it (spirit) was no longer there. As years goes by, I realised that my ragged doll was indeed a demonic doll with black eyes back then that would harm anyone who provokes it. But still I had no ideas who bought this doll to me in the first place, as I was busy celebrating Christmas with my cousins and villager kids. Only I could remember that my ragdoll was once a lovely doll and to protect the village folks and children from creatures that lurking in the forests.
Till to this day, I still keep a porcelain doll that my mum bought, in the display cupboard.
